{"id":797,"date":"2020-04-04T10:06:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T14:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=797"},"modified":"2020-04-29T17:12:57","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T21:12:57","slug":"google-classroom-tips-and-tricks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=797","title":{"rendered":"Google Classroom Tips and Tricks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=798\">Distance Learning Tips and Tricks<\/a> &gt; <em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Google Classroom Tips<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turn Off Email Notifications in Google\nClassroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of us are getting flooded with\nGoogle Classroom notifications email.&nbsp; This can be turned off.&nbsp; Go to\nclassroom.google.com and on the main screen, click on the three horizontal\nlines at the top left of the page.&nbsp; Choose settings from the panel that\nappears and turn off the notifications, there.&nbsp; &nbsp;NOTE:&nbsp; This is\nan off\/on setting, meaning you either have the notifications or you\ndon\u2019t.&nbsp; You can\u2019t keep it on for just a select group of kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Message One or a Group of students in Google Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can do this easily on Google Classroom.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/socsd.zoom.us\/rec\/share\/4-1IA-ms7DhITdaT8UrSYIVxEZa1aaa81CIYr6FYzkrCM98mot7Ypyzy7Vrvh_J0?startTime=1585866032000\">Here is how<\/a>:&nbsp;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turning in Work on Paper in Google Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know lots of families are having trouble figuring out how to turn in work on paper through Google Classroom.&nbsp; One simple way is to take a picture with the camera on the computer and load it into a Google Document.&nbsp; That can be put right up on Google Classroom as an assignment.&nbsp; It\u2019s not a perfect solution.&nbsp; We don\u2019t have too many of those right now.&nbsp; In this case, the image is only as clear as the camera on the computer allows it to be, but that\u2019s true for any method we choose.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/socsd.zoom.us\/rec\/share\/-JxkEY7wqEFLRbPr2GbkZIJ8H4n1X6a80XAeqaAJmEeN-4CcwYrrhfrLhcmBgrqe?startTime=1585856426000\">Here is a tutorial<\/a> which you are welcome to share if you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passing Work Back and Forth in Google Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several people have asked how to pass documents back and\nforth with a student.&nbsp; Here is a quick\ntutorial. &nbsp;I think one of the main issues\nis that on Google Classroom, they have to re-check assignments that they have\nturned in if they want to see your comments.&nbsp;\nIt may not be obvious to them that you have responded. It sometimes\nhelps to go into Google Classroom as one of your students, as Marc suggested,\nyesterday.&nbsp; Don\u2019t make any changes, but\nyou can use this technique to view what your students are seeing on their end\nand that can help you figure out what may be confusing to them.&nbsp; For more information, have a look at this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Passing Work Back and Forth in Google Classroom\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R9RR7NaLpio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/socsd.zoom.us\/rec\/play\/6JcrcOutrWk3SICSsQSDB_9_W43se6yshnUX8_temhvgVCMAMQCvN7NHY7aT9hSpn8huQ1xk_E9xMFM1?autoplay=true&amp;startTime=1586198201000\">video for the children<\/a> on how to unsubmit work:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My Google Folder is a Mess!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is your Google Folder a huge mess?&nbsp; When kids work is shared with you, it shows up in a part of your Google Folder called \u201cShared with Me\u201d and it\u2019s making a mess.&nbsp; That\u2019s not something we can change, but there is much better way to find work in your Google Classroom.&nbsp; Just go into your Google Drive and click on the folder called Classroom.  You will find a folder for each classroom you teach and within that, there are folders for each assignment.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bouncing In and Out of Google Classroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some students are having trouble logging into Google\nClassroom or they get bounced out when they submit work. &nbsp;&nbsp;Often that comes from having more than one\nGoogle Account on a computer and you suddenly find you are not in the correct\none. Try this:&nbsp; Log out of all Google\nAccounts on the computer and just log in as the student.&nbsp; Often this solves the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Students are saying they worked on a document and you can\u2019t\nsee the changes that they have made:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often this comes when students forget to press the Turn It\nIn button at the top of the document.&nbsp; Sometimes\nstudents are sharing a document with you rather than turning it in.&nbsp; Remind them to watch Marc\u2019s video from the\nother day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Voice Recorder for Distance Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a couple of very simple tools that might enhance your\nlessons.&nbsp; First, this Voice Recorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/online-voice-recorder.com\/\">https:\/\/online-voice-recorder.com\/<\/a>\nis a simple tool that you can embed in your lessons.&nbsp; You can ask students to read to you and\nrecord themselves and provide a link in your Google Classroom Assignment.&nbsp; It is simple for them to attach the\nrecordings in Google Classroom and return them to you.&nbsp; Here is a video that you can share with families:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1PmP3Uw18vG5OjH3vF1K4tExabRCLyJOj\/view\">https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1PmP3Uw18vG5OjH3vF1K4tExabRCLyJOj\/view<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unsubmitting\nWork on Google Classroom<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen students submit their work using the Turn\nIt In button, they have the option to unsubmit if they want to continue to edit\ntheir document.&nbsp; They cannot edit their\nturned in document unless they do this step\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"262\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/turnitin.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-832\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are your students &#8220;deleting&#8221; work from their assignments by mistake?  It&#8217;s not gone and it can be re-connected.
