{"id":810,"date":"2020-04-04T10:26:14","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T14:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=810"},"modified":"2020-04-09T15:36:52","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T19:36:52","slug":"zoom-the-basic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=810","title":{"rendered":"Zoom &#8211; The Basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/?page_id=798\">Distance Learning Tips and Tricks<\/a> &gt; <em>Zoom &#8211; The Basics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting Into Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must enter zoom using your WEB BROWSER.&nbsp; Open <a href=\"http:\/\/socsd.zoom.us\">socsd.zoom.us<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; NOTE:&nbsp; If you forget the address, there is also an icon in your Google Apps.&nbsp; That is the 9 squares icon you see on any Google page. &nbsp;You cannot get to your account just using the Zoom app or the zoom.us website.&nbsp; You must go in one of the ways stated above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your log-in for Zoom is your Google address (username@socsd.org) with your regular Google\/District Password.&nbsp; The first time you go in, the system will ask you to confirm your email address and take you through some steps.&nbsp; At some point, you will also be asked to download a small program which is called a client.&nbsp; This is normal and safe and you should download the client as instructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your account is set up, you can confirm that all is working by entering a test conference, here:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/test\">https:\/\/zoom.us\/test<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Setting Up Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1oBcowhkK9ECpooxhU-s-XdcnSzebSxqNuWfjqDY4wLU\/edit#slide=id.p\">Marc&#8217;s settings recommendations are here<\/a>.  Use these settings to make sure your meetings are secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To Start the\nMeeting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will be on camera in your\nhome.&nbsp; Before you start the computer,\ncheck the space around you and make sure there are no personal items\nvisible.&nbsp; The children will see what is\naround you and what is behind you.&nbsp; It is\nalso a good idea to let the others in your home know that you will be on camera\nfor a period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Log into Zoom.&nbsp; You should see the meetings tab on the screen\nwith an option to Start the meeting.&nbsp;\nClick to start the meeting.&nbsp; A box\nwill appear asking you about the audio.&nbsp;\nClick Join with Computer Audio.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"965\" height=\"53\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zoom-Toolbar.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zoom-Toolbar.png 965w, https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zoom-Toolbar-300x16.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zoom-Toolbar-768x42.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zoom-Toolbar-940x53.png 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Controlling the\nMeeting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now look at the bottom of your\nscreen.&nbsp; When you move the mouse, a bar\nappears.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mute and Video Controls<\/strong>:&nbsp; On the left, you can mute your own audio and video and can access some of the settings for each by clicking on the upward pointing arrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Security\non Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Security button on the toolbar is something only the host or co-host of a meeting will.\u00a0 The Security button brings up a menu when clicked which will let you lock a meeting, so that no others may join.\u00a0 You can also enable and disable participant&#8217;s ability to share their screen, chat and rename themselves.\u00a0 This will help you keep some control over your meetings.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t see this right away, you may need to wait for the program to update itself.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"204\" height=\"210\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sec-bar.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-830\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Manage Participants<\/strong> brings\nup a white bar on the right.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can invite participants using the command on the bottom of the bar.  The Invite button allows you to bring up an invitation to the meeting if you need to send that to students who cannot get on.<\/li><li>You can <strong><em>Mute All the student\u2019s microphones<\/em><\/strong> with a button at the bottom of the screen.&nbsp; It is best to mute them all and let them unmute just to speak when it is their turn.<\/li><li>At the top of that bar, any students who are in the waiting room appear and you can accept them to allow them to enter.&nbsp; Make sure to only approve SOCSD students.&nbsp; It is possible for students to set up a second Zoom account and enter using the URL of the meeting.&nbsp; Using this to misbehave anonymously is called Zoom Bombing and is something we want to avoid.<\/li><li>You can mute a participant by rolling your mouse over their name and clicking Mute. <\/li><li>You can remove a user by clicking More next to their name when you roll your mouse over their name.<\/li><li>You can click More at the bottom and prevent students from renaming themselves.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Share Screen <\/strong>allows you to\nshare your screen with the students.&nbsp; See\nbelow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chat<\/strong> brings up a chat\nwindow which students will also have access to.&nbsp;\nThey can post questions, there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Record<\/strong> allows you to start and stop a recording of the meeting.&nbsp; This can be handy.&nbsp; <br> When you begin the meeting, the system asks if you want to record locally, which makes a file on your computer, or to the cloud.&nbsp; Please record to a LOCAL file and post that to your Google Classroom.&nbsp; At the end of the meeting, the system will ask where you want to store your recording.&nbsp; Find a place on your computer that makes sense to you.&nbsp; If you are new to this, save to your desktop.&nbsp; When you are done, open your Google Classroom and post this as you would post any file.&nbsp; Posting this in your Google Classroom allows you to restrict who sees the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Breakout Rooms<\/strong> allows you\nto create small groups for side work and is for advanced users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>End Meeting<\/strong> is how you finish the meeting.&nbsp; In the box that pops up, you must <strong>close the room for all participants<\/strong> when you leave. This way, students can not remain in the meeting unsupervised.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sharing your\nScreen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, you will be sharing parts\nof your computer screen.&nbsp; <strong>Please close\nany personal or private things<\/strong> that you may have up before you do\nthis.&nbsp; Please close your district email on\nthe machine you are working on.&nbsp; If you\nneed access to email during the meeting, use your phone or another device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"73\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/share1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/share1.png 671w, https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/share1-300x33.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharing the screen allows you to\nbring up any application such as Powerpoint, Smart Notebook, a web browser\nwhich can include Google Documents or Slides.&nbsp;\nWhen you click share you choose which application you are sharing.&nbsp; Anything in that application that is visible\nto you is visible to them.&nbsp; Any changes\nyou make are visible to them.&nbsp; There are\ndrawing tools which enable you to mark up a document as you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"45\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/whiteboard.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/whiteboard.png 696w, https:\/\/blog.jacobtanenbaum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/whiteboard-300x19.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you begin your sharing\nsession, there is a Whiteboard option which brings up a simple white screen and\na few drawing tools.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These allow you to draw, erase,\nwrite text or use a spotlight, which highlights an area of the screen you want\nthe students to focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each time you want to move\nbetween applications, or to the whiteboard, you must stop sharing and start\nagain to bring up the new window you want the students to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Creating a Screen\nCast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A screen cast is simply a narrated video where you do an\naction on a computer and narrate as you go.&nbsp;\nHere is an example of a Screen Cast:&nbsp;\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cVzcS43ORpw&amp;t=31s\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cVzcS43ORpw&amp;t=31s<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are lots of ways to make a screen cast.&nbsp; Zoom works quite well.&nbsp; In essence, you just create a meeting where\nyou share your screen and you record the meeting.
